La Isla de Barro
A territory is more than a location on a map. It has a smell, a sound, a light that distinguishes it from any other place on earth.
La Isla de Barro brought together Amy Bravo and Albert Peguero in a fantasized world where each artist’s personal obsessions and narratives, anchored in a homeland drawn from memories, recollections, and tales, blended into an immersive scene of wonder.
While Amy uses symbolism, memorabilia, and recounted familial histories to reinvent a fantastic, intimate vision of Cuba she builds from inherited mythologies and personal idiom, Albert draws on the traditional building aesthetic of his native Dominican Republic to create playful, surreal structures that interrogate the shared experience of working class immigrants. In dialogue, both practices refuse monolithic representations of tropical insular spaces, insisting instead on radical plurality and the possibility of reinvention.
La Isla de Barro celebrates singularity as a vital component of a greater universal story, and belonging as a state of being rather than a fixed destination.
