A Tale of Ancestral Memories
A Tale of Ancestral Memories was a major public art commission by Dominique Fung, presented by Rockefeller Center and the Art Production Fund across multiple buildings in Midtown Manhattan: a 125-foot multi-panel mural at the Rink Level of 45 Rockefeller Plaza, three sculptural vitrines, and a curated selection of paintings at 10, 30, and 50 Rock and Radio Park.
Dominique’s work draws on Chinese mythology, oceanic imagery, and Shang and Tang Dynasty artifacts to construct an ancestral world at once intimate and monumental. The commission asked her to work at a scale and in a context unlike any gallery setting.
Behind the scenes, the work was to make the monumental possible: budgets, fabrication, installation, assistants and documentation, all held together so Dominique could paint.
Alongside the physical installation, a microsite was built in collaboration with Man Hoang to extend the work beyond Rockefeller Center’s footprint, offering the full 125-foot painting to view online, alongside Dominique’s sketches, source material and inspirations, and a conversation with the artist in her own words.
